Nestled away between the Clare and Gilbert Valleys, the township of Mintaro and its surrounding district hold the stories of occupation by the traditional indigenous people, the Ngadjuri, by early pastoralists and then by colonial settlers who came to the area during the mining and agricultural booms in the mid to late 1800s.

Remarkable for the many buildings that remain from its early settlement, the town’s importance to South Australia’s early colonial history was confirmed when Mintaro was declared the state’s first rural State Heritage Area in 1984.

Modern Mintaro continues to be a hub for the thriving agricultural and wine-growing businesses in the region. Old and new residents alike are adding their stories to Mintaro’s long history.

A tranquil setting in which to live or a picturesque destination to visit, Mintaro and its district have much to offer, whether it be for employment, wine and food, sports and other activities, its rich heritage or as a place to relax away from it all.
